WARNING ON CANS/LIDS

My baby girl 1yr. grabbed a can of green beans out of trash that had lid still on and got her fingers stuck. While trying to figure out the best way to get them out, out she yanks her fingers, blood everywhere. scarey for me...... she had 4 stitches in one finger. I was cleaning house, got in hurry and threw it in reg. trash instead of recycleable. So please learn from my MISTAKE open them all the way and keep them up high.

I'm sorry this happened to your little girl. There are some pretty inexpensive can openers you can buy that take the lids off but do not leave a sharp edge at all. I think pampered chef makes one. The one I have is just from walmart, but I'm sure it has saved even ME from cut fingers. I hope your little one heals quickly.

me too. I felt like THE WORST mom in the world, I was sick throwing up all night, replaying it over and over and finally realizing I can only try to do better and make sure her stitches are o.k. It was one of the scariest things I have seen. Definately, not something I ever want to see again.

Been there, done that! When my son was about 2 he stuck his fingers into a mostly opened can trying to get some more black olives. He got 6 stitches in his finger. The next day I went out and purchased one of those can openers that removes the lid without leaving a sharp edge.
If it's any consolation, he has no recollection of this, and neither will your daughter. Don't beat yourself up about it, stuff happens, even when we have the best of intentions. With my 9 year old son we've had stitches twice, a broken wrist and last week a concussion.

Candy - Sorry to hear about this - kiss those little fingers for me! I can see how she could get into the trash can at such a young age - she's so mobile! Don't beat yourself up over this - PJ had to get stitches on his left eyelid when he was two because he fell and cut it on a Tonka dump truck. That truck has been up on a shelf ever since. I want to get rid of it, but Phil wants to keep it around for "later." Anyway, it happens to all of us - kids are "Fast and Curious" (get it...like the movie?). See ya soon!

Sorry to hear about your little one's injury. Thankfully their body heals quickly. I have a Pampered Chef can opener. It opens cans without the sharp edge. It's great. You can look at it online. Don't beat yourself up. The can was in the trash can, so you were doing your best.

thanks for all the sympathy and words of encouragement. It sure helps. Did I mention my baby's dad hit the stop sign at avera emergancy on the way in to the er in our new car. Scratches all done side. Not a good time. but in all honesty, drive by there, WHO PUTS A STOP SIGN RIGHT AT THE TURN TO THE ER?? Security guard wanted to know "Why didn't we stop at it. Ya right, I said"does the ambulance, give me a ticket instead of him, it was an emergancy, and who puts a stop sign at such a place, I would run it again if I ever visited here again." he didn't give us a ticket-

Well, my almost 18 month old joined the club tonight and ended up with stitches in her little foot! We are in the process of getting stuff packed in our house to move and she was inbetween her bedroom where I was packing stuff, and the living room (through the kitchen) to where her daddy was packing stuff...anyway, somehow a broken picture frame that was in the trash ended up on the floor and she sliced the side of her foot open. We thought it had been glass until I got home after taking her to acute care and scoped out the area. She was such a trooper though! I'm so proud of her--she sat there and let the doctor dig around in it looking for any trace of glass and didn't even flinch! The only time she cried was when he pinched it together after the stitch was through the skin. She stopped crying immediately after the let go of her foot. All this to say, I feel like a bad mommy, and completely know how you feel!

Same problem w/soda cans. Caitlin found an empty can @daycare last summer & cut her finger on the inside edge. Not too bad, but another new surprise in owies. It seems like I see more of the potentially dangerous stuff when I try to look at from her side.
Like it says above, luckily most things mend quickly.
