I always wondered what it would be like to be in a pageant, but I know I would NEVER even qualify to be in one! Ha!
I looked at the site, the blog, then the application. I had to laugh when it said "Current and recent community involvement"...It's rare that I get any time outside of my kids/daycare other than Walmart! I would "give it a whirl", but can't see myself having a chance being that I haven't gotten out to help the community...not that I don't want to!

I do help out once a week Volunteering at Sanford and hopefully next week I will be a Mentor Mom, but definetly dont have the looks to pull off being in a paegant! Maybe if I lost 50 pounds and got a tummy tuck I could MAYBE qualify! Ha like that would ever happen, well atleast the tummy tuck part, am working on the loosing weight part! :)
Getting through Walmart aisles without hitting anyone should qualify :) Seriously though, community involvement doesn't need to be anything profound. Maybe there is a charity you would like to help more in the future and/or would like to see others help with or know about. The Mrs. system is well aware they are dealing with busy mothers.

I attended the Mrs. South Dakota pageant last year and I was really gun ho about doing it myself this year until I watched the Mrs. America pageant. They were showing behind the scenes footage and the ladies were talking about their designer dresses and how much they were and I just could not bring myself to do it! After weighing in the cost of travel for my family if I were to go on the the big pageant, at this time in my life I just did not think the benefits outweighed the sacrifice to my family monetarily. It would be a great opportunity but there is a lot of cost involved.
As for costs, I'd say 75% of my expenses ran off of sponsorships that I collected after winning. With the title of Mrs. SD, most businesses were pretty open to a contribution, especially if you or or husband have a relationship with them.
Yes, the gown costs at Mrs. America are nothing to blink at (retailing at $2K+), but I was fortunate to have the talented Hugo Sarmiento (downtown) who let me borrow one of his designer dresses (carrying a 3K dollar dress through the airport is a nerve-racking thing).
My mom actually used to run in the pageant for about 5 years in a row. She never got it, but came close a couple times. She used the same dress the whole time, and had a lot of fun. My sister was also in the Miss Teen SD pageant and she got it in 2005 I think? It was a lot of fun to go to Tennesee with her and watch her compete in something that big! But the thing is they were models for RoseMary, took the classes and everything. My brother models too, they are in the wedding show, and many commercials around SuFu. Pretty neat tho, the whole experience.
*Don't worry...be happy*
I was 1st runner up Little Miss Kingston in the 2nd grade in Arkansas. My only pageant experience mind you. My mom wouldn't let me do it the next year, she said we had to give someone else a chance. The little gal who won was my best friend and she was a pageant pro. She had the poofy dress, done up hair and everything. I had a homemade dress and still got 1st runner up, plain hair and all. :)I got some flowers and a little crown.
So, I am assuming that since it is MRS. South Dakota that you would have to be married?
~What sane person could live in this world and not be crazy.
Qualifications: Mrs. SD contestants must be married, at least 18 years of age, resident of South Dakota for at least 6 months, citizen of the United States, possess a good moral character.
Ladies...they are still taking applications for Mrs. South Dakota. I will be there to cheer you on. If you have any questions, let me know.

this may sound silly to some, but what size and body type are the women that run for this?? i consider myself to be average, size 12-14.....but i also wouldnt want to be the only one my size participating.....i am sure there are others maybe wondering the same thing....i guess i have seen the pageants on tv, so maybe that answers my question, maybe it would be a good goal for next year =) haha!!
Very common question. Last year there were women ranging from size 14 to size 4, so it really doesn't matter. How you carry yoursef and the poise and personality you bring to the competition does matter.

oo.. well that is right up my alley.
when is the deadline?
what do you need once you've applied.. like do you need a nice dress or is it just they talk to you and stuff and if you get in then you need stuff?
exciting :).

oh also, do you need a "special talent" for it?.
No talent category for the Mrs. system. They say being married is talent enough... wouldn't you agree!

I haven't heard a definite deadline, but at this point, I'd make a decision this weekend. I applied 2 weeks before the event, but I'd recommend giving yourself as much time as possible. The event is June 28... so that would give you 20ish days.
You will be accepted based on your application you submit. So after that you can get started. If/when accepted you'll get need a dress, one-piece swimsuit and interview suit. There are also some sponsorships you'll have to secure, but that is easy and fun way to get support. You'll get a letter with all this info once you apply.
Does that answer your questions?

I should add that the event is open to the public. So if you want to check it out or cheer on a fellow mom, make plans to attend.

Have you ever considered being a candidate for Mrs. South Dakota? The pageant event is June 28 in Sioux Falls, SD (still plenty of time).
As the current Mrs. SD, and mother of one-soon-to-be-two, it would be great to see a mother representing the women of SD (although this isn't a requirement).
The first step is to fill out an application at http://www.professionalimagebyrosemary.com/mrsSDA.asp
You will be notified when your application is approved and what steps to take next. You can also ask me questions.
I had never entered a pageant, nor did I consider myself "pageant material", but my experience this year has been rewarding for myself and my family. At the national Mrs. America event (www.mrsamerica.com) I met a lot of professional women and dedicated moms who enjoyed doing good things for their state.
