Help...What should we do???

   Submitted by debomommy on May 15, 2008 - 10:48am.

So my Mother-in-Law is in town from California and I need ideas of what we can do as a family this weekend. I'm new to Sioux Falls so I myself really dont know everything that there is to do here. Any good suggestions would really be appreciated!

Thanks!

I would reccomend going to falls park. You can take a walk. go up to the tower for a great view, go to the overlook cafe for a drink or a snack. You can also catch the Trolly for a great tour of downtown. They also have the horsebarn, filled with great artwork.

Or you could do what us locals do with relatives we don't know what else to do with. Take her to the mall ;)

Falls park is awesome. If you like baseball the Canaries have a game on Friday night. There is some hiking at Newton Hills camp ground, nothing too difficult. The zoo is always an option too.
Listen to your heart, it whispers softly so listen closely.

LOL...we've already done the mall!

Do you know where you can get more info about the Trolly??? Have you ever done it???

The trolly leaves from falls park every hour and half hour. It is free, and it goes through downtown. You can pull a string to stop the trolley, or get off at any stop and then hop back on later. I have taken my kids on it several times. AS a matter of fact it is how we kick off summer vac. You can go to the city of sioux falls website for more info, including a trolly schedule. Oh, and another tip, I have always liked how pictures turn out on the trolly. I take a pix of my kids in front of and sitting in the trolly every summer.

LOVE the trolley! I just rode it for the first time with my ESL class on Tuesday night! Our pictures turned out great, and I learned a lot about all the old, stone buildings downtown. Great, free activity!

Well, there's the Tulip Festival ;), or check out SiouxFallsEvents.com. I haven't checked it so I don't know what is going on this weekend, but I'm sure there is something you can do.

In addition there is always The Pettigrew Museum, The Washington Pavillion, The Court House Museum. You can walk along the bike paths, Go to Terrace Park and visit the Chinese Gardens. If you want to picnic Newton Hills is always beautiful.

I, too, would suggest the Old Courthouse Museum and the Japanese Gardens at Terrace Park.
The Cake goddess - Cakes for all occasions, desserts and cookies, too!

Are those both free?? I'm trying to come up with a list of "Free Stuff" to do with the kids this summer. I'm trying to kick off a family tradition called "Free Stuff Friday" where we hit one free attraction (even if it's just the library or the park) each Friday.

Also, how is the butterfly house at Sertoma?? Kid friendly??

We just went to the Japanese Gardens yesterday. They aren't really in bloom quite yet, but in years past, I've been there when everything is colorful and it's beautiful. There's also large ponds with ducks you can feed, playgrounds, and lots of room to run. I would definitely recommend the gardens, along with Falls Park, which is also beautiful. The Butterfly House is kid-friendly. You can't bring in a stroller, though, so you'd have to either carry your kids or keep an eye on them (if they're like my kids who like to destroy things). The butterflies are everywhere, and fly up and land right on you! Both of my kids LOVE going there, and then you can hit the huge park right next door (is it Sertoma Park?).

Yes it is Sertoma, which also has the Outdoor Campus, a neat place to take the kids, and hiking trails behind it. Japanese Gardens are also nice. We are having my husband's grad party right across the pond there.

If you look in 'the local best' it is a green catalouge with coupons in it, you can find it a hy-vee or shopko and many businesses, it has a coupon for buy on get on free for the Sertoma Butterfly House which is nice because it is like $8 per person.

The Butterfly House is fun. Depends on the age of the kids. There were LOTS of kids there when we went, but it depends on the age as far as them having fun. I know there is a cost for the Butterfly House, but the park over there is a lot of fun!

Thought of another thing....the benefit for Jada Cooper is tomorrow. You could buy some baked goods from the bake sale, let your kids enjoy the carnival, check out all the awesome prizes they have up for auction, AND help out a family all at the same time!

The Sculpture Walk downtown!
***I just wanted to add that there is a store downtown called Sticks and Steel and I just love to look around in there..since things are kinda spendy that is about all I can do but the things that they have in the store are so unique...here is their website: http://www.sticksandsteel.com/about_our_store.html

We LOVE the Sculpture Walk! We went downtown to see them but we didn't know they were being moved around and our 3 year old was so disappointed. Also, if she likes theater at all you could take her to see "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" playing downtown. My friend is in it and the show is hilarious. The cast is terrific; it's a little pricey but it's well worth the money.

The SculptureWalk sculptures are all new, now, too. I haven't walked around down Phillips Avenue yet to check any of them out in detail, but just from driving by they look to be really cool this year!
