Fundraisers

How do you feel about school and youth group fundraisers? Do you send your kids around the neighborhood to sell the goods? Do you give money to the school in lieu of buying products? Or do you trash the catalogues and move on?

My parents never made us sell anything for school fundraisers. They just donated the money. Can you imagine how annoying it is for the neighbors (we get asked all the time - I will donate the money when the time comes). We did sell girl scout cookies and for baseball we always sold candy bars. Everyone liked that stuff though.

It is scary when parents send their kids out alone to do the fundraiser. We've had school kids at our house asking for money for Harrisburg Explorer, but no one really knew whythey were raising money. One child told us it was for the PTA, another told us it was for playground equipment, and yet another told us it was jump a thon. Huh? We told the kids to come back when they knew they were sure what they were raising money for. Overall, school fundraisers are a pet peeve of mine for many reasons. Working in the schools, I have seen the companys use gimmicks to get the kids sell a certain number of items. Then there is the pressure of a class has to sell so many items and then they get an ice cream party. Like I said above, it's scary and sad to me that so many parents let their kids do that alone when they have no clue what is going on. Next year, our kids will be in school and will have the fundraisers sent home with them with promises of free toys or parties--we'll donate money so it's pure profit for the cause.

We gave them a fair shot and now we trash them. One year my daughter worked hard and the company failed to give her the crappy gift she earned. It is a lot of work for the parents to deliver the items. Since I work out of my home we don't have work to go to to get people interested. We still do the scouts, but that is it.

Since Josh is only 2, we haven’t had to deal with any fundraisers yet, but I can safely say, I’m not looking forward to them. I, too, would much rather give money than to have to buy overpriced cookie dough or gift wrap. Ick! I don’t want to have to ask my friends or co-workers to buy stuff like that either.

My daughters elementary school has fairs and a mindcore marathon that they use to raise money for the school. The fairs have games that you buy tickets to play, kids have a blast. And mindcore tests their memory of facts they are given to practice(even kindergarteners) and ask family and friends to donate money to the cause. We haven't gone door to door with anything. My dad used to consider going door to door and even asking family was like begging. I do not agree with him. I agree that kids should not be out on their own doing these things and they should know exactly what it is going towards.
